Perfectly ripe

A ripe avocado yields gently to pressure, has a creamy texture, and a rich, nutty flavour. For Hass avocados, the peel often darkens as ripeness advances.

How to recognize this state :

  • Yields gently when pressed in the palm of the hand
  • Feels slightly soft but not mushy
  • For Hass, skin often becomes darker and more purplish-black
  • Flesh is green and creamy
  • Pleasant buttery, nutty flavour
  • No soft pockets or sunken bruises
  • Stem cap may come off more easily
  • Ideal for slicing, mashing, or spreading

Selection

How to choose avocados ?

Section titled “How to choose ?”

To choose quality avocados at the supermarket or market :

  • Choose the ripeness stage that matches when you plan to eat them
  • Gently squeeze the avocado in the palm of your hand, not with your fingertips
  • Avoid fruit with soft pockets, deep dents, or split skin
  • For Hass avocados, remember that darker skin can indicate more ripeness, but firmness matters more than color alone
  • Small superficial scuffs on thick skin are usually less important than bruising or decay
